[W8MWA] ARES, where are you?

I know an older WVU graduate student I met on campus recently and he told
me he was active in ARES in his hometown in TN. He asked if we had a ARES
organization here and I explained how here it had been tied to a club in
the past but hadn't heard any mention of ARES in a few years. He would be
interested in helping with ARES events when he can but not interested in
belonging to a amateur radio club.
My question is, does ARES even exist anymore and if it does what events
does it participate in? Who manages this local arm of the organization? Are
they open to new members or participants? It seems there have been
opportunities of late for ARES to exercise and hone it's skills but no
mention of ARES participating.
Any useful info is appreciated.
