Hi Craig,,,Looked in my log and you were my first MJ!! Hv your QS also..Tnx

I misunderstood some of what you were saying. Yes. it makes sense to use
the best contest logging program for contests. As I hv only been back on the
air for 3 years after 37 off, I still have a lot to catch on!! I would
certainly appreciate your recommendation for a contest logging program, and
will look further into N1MM contest logging programs. Yes, it is very easy to
mesh logs by, I think ADIF files.

As far as the TS-940, I am not yet familiar with or have operated it. I
certainly will do so now.

I have only been the Chairman for about 3 days, organized my first contest
(with John's help), planned two other ones on the 18th (with John's
help)...my first chairmanship ever, anywhere, LOL. I will certainly appreciate
any advice, comments, and suggestions. I'm in a learning curve.

Although I consider myself quite knowledgeable in the use of computers in
general, I have a lot to learn, after 37 years away from Ham Radio, as far
as the application of computers to Ham Radio, and the "New Fangled" solid
state, computer operated, non repairable, transceivers now in use. I learned
a few weeks ago, from Rick, how to tune a Linear Amp. Never did in my life,
except once at my Elmer's station in 1966. He had a homebrew amp with 2
4-1000a's!! Think he was able to put out about 5kw

I wasn't saying to use more than one software for a contest. Everyone
should use the same software when contesting for that contest. It is very
easy to mesh logbooks. I believe some people have been using paper logs at
the club. Does someone enter all of these QSOs in the N3EQF log? All I
was
saying is software written for contesting has an advantage over other
software when contesting, and other software has an advantage over
contesting software when casual operating. As an example I have the latest
Callbook loaded on my computers and when I enter a call in my logging
program, it looks up that station and shows their name, QTH, beam heading,
distance, etc., and does not need internet access (great for the club who
does not have internet access). By the way has any consideration been
given
in using the TS-940 for contesting rather than the TS-2000. I think the
940
would be the much better radio.

Sorry crahill...Don't know ur name.

The TS-2000 will only be used, I would guess, 5-10% of the time for
contesting. It is the main rig, hooked up to a possible 1500 watts and a
tri
band
yagi .I have also used N1MM software and find it very good, but John,
WB3IFD, has already purchased the CD with all the programs from N3FJP. We
have
been using the General Logging Program for several weeks now. I, as
Contesting Chairman, am just giving my opinion as such. I would not be
opposed to
switching to another logging system if the membership wants to, and would
fully support any change .I do not thing it is wise to have several
different
logging programs from different sources used at the club. It will lead to
problems sending in logs when we do multi-station contesting, and we will
possibly not have one consistent log on the TS-2000 station, but possibly
many, that will make it very difficult, if not impossible, to mesh into
one
concise and accurate log for the entire W3GV call sign. Of course, if
anyone
wants to operate with their own call sign, they can use any logging
program they want (paper or otherwise or none).

I totally agree with you regarding the Laptop and Rigblaster. Both merit
consideration by the Membership. Opening up access to the popular digital
modes will be a draw to the Club for new, and inactive members, to become
avtive members again or join as a new member. I also hope we can come up
with
an economical Internet Connection.

I know I am the "New Kid on the Block" and hope I am not overstepping
taking a position. I do not know of the Club's financial position, so do
not
want to be pushy looking to spend money we cannot afford.

Looking forward to meeting you, if we already haven't....Mike...Wb3del

I haven't used N3FJP software before, but I have used N1MM. If all we are

going to use the rig for is contesting then N1MM is a good program. I am
not a contester, but I am a DXer. I've used win-eqf since it's inception,
so since I'm used to it, tend to push it. There really is nothing wrong
with putting several logging programs on a computer and then the operator
can pick which one he wants to use. I think the club would be wise to buy
a
new laptop and also pick up an interface such as the RigBlaster Advantage
which will provide computer interface and allow people to run the various
modes.

I think the N3FJP program is much nicer for contesting. I have used
WIN-EQF but find it displays much less information than N3FJP logging
programs.
Also N3FJP seems to be doing a better job of keeping the programs
updated.

I think it would be nice for the club to set up computer logging and
with
the computer logging, also CW sending. Just about every year I operate
as

DX. Let's suppose W3ABC calls me. I type W3ABC in the logging screen
and
then hit 1 on the extended keyboard. This automatically sends W3ABC 5nn
 .
W3ABC then sends his report to me and I hit 2 on the extended keyboard
which
sends tu MJ/K3PLV up. Then I hit F1 and W3ABC is logged with the
operating
frequency and mode automatically entered in the log. The memories can
be
changed for any reply and there are 10 of them, 1 through 10 on the
extended
keyboard. I also can hit Ctrl K and type what I want and what I type
will
be automatically sent as CW. If I have access to a paddle, I can also
use
that to make comments. So if someone I know calls me, I can chat with
them
for a minute and then continue with the pile up. This is not at all
expensive and is easy to set up. Also for the people that prefer to log
and
send CW the old conventional way, they can still do that. Comments?

GM ALL...Those participating in the contest were:

John...WB3IFD
Ron...WB3DOM
Mike...Sorry, forgot his call, but I believe he is the Secretary
Mike...WB3DEL

I started off (shakily) at contest start, 1:00, with Mike logging. I
quickly found out I could no longer copy 30-35 WPM!! We managed only 7
contacts
in the first 20 min. After a while I discovered it was much better to
finish the contact completely, then, when done pass the info to Mike. .
It
allowed me to concentrate better. Started gaining speed...John showed
up
with
coffee for me (thank you!). After about a half hour of sweat pouring off
me, Ron arrived, sat down with pen and paper and started calling off
exchanges
to Mike to enter in the log. I was able to relax, concentrate on my
sending, and not worry about trying to copy 35 WPM. WHAT A RELIEF!!

After I had been on the key for an hour, Ron took over with a beautiful
Vibroplex straight key. I had been using my Kent Dual Paddle and was
having
problems with it.
He started rattling off contacts at a fast pace. We had started on 10M
then
he switched to 15M. After a while we all took a break to chat. I got back
on for a while, then Ron took it. and eventually switched to 20M.
Another
break...More chatting...2 or 3 more contacts and we decided to call it
a
day
at about 4:00

Results: 3 hours airtime

Have not checked the log yet but...

Contacts 72
Multipliers 28
Score 2016

Not too bad, I thing, considering we must have spent at least 45 minutes
off air shooting the breeze.

Next contests we will participate in is the weekend of Jan. 18..The
North
American QSO Party-SSB and also The ARRL January VHF Contest. Need
operators and loggers!! Or if you just come to kibitz, (Goggle it!!)
that's fine.

Please contact me if you can come via e-mail or Cell# 814-795-4501, OR
JUST
SHOW UP!!

73's...Mike...WB3DEL
