PRESS RELEASE
LEONARD AWARD TO BE PRESENTED BY ARRL AT HUDSON COUNTY RED CROSS
Michaelangelo Conte Honored for his Article, "Radio Operators Took to Air"
March 1st, 2002, JERSEY CITY, NJ: The Cirri Memorial Radio Club will be
gathering on March 10th to attend the presentation of the 2001 Bill Leonard,
W2SKE, Professional Media Award to Michaelangelo Conte, a reporter for The
Jersey Journal. This award is given annually by the American Radio Relay
League (ARRL), a national organization of amateur radio operators, to a
professional journalist for outstanding coverage of amateur radio in TV,
radio, print or multimedia. The winner receives an engraved plaque and a
check for $500.
According to the ARRL, Conte's winning report covered the communications
activities of the Jersey City Amateur Radio Club following the World Trade
Center attack last September. The club, which is affiliated with the Hudson
County chapter of the American Red Cross, focuses on emergency
commu
nications, and was just being formed at the time of the attack, not
having even held its first meeting prior to September 11th. Several club
members were interviewed about their roles in providing a needed
communications link between Red Cross in Jersey City and other disaster
relief units.
The Jersey City Amateur Radio club was renamed the Lt. Robert D. Cirri, Sr.,
Memorial Radio Club in honor of Bob Cirri, KA2OTD, who died a hero in the
World Trade Center attack. Lt. Cirri, 39, was the Hudson County "District
Emergency Coordinator" for the Amateur Radio Emergency Service (ARES), and
had been crucial in the formation of the club. A lieutenant with the Port
Authority Police, Cirri was helping to evacuate workers from the World Trade
Center when it collapsed.
The Leonard award is named for Bill Leonard, a former president of CBS News
and amateur radio operator, who wrote an article for Sports Illustrated
entitled, "The Battle of the Hams," which described the sport of
long-d
istance radio communications. In November of 1996, Leonard was
inducted into the Broadcasting and Cable Hall of Fame. Leonard passed away,
or as amateur radio operators say, became a Silent Key, in 1994.
The presentation will take place at the Hudson County chapter of the
American Red Cross, 26 Greenville Ave., in Jersey City, NJ at 4 PM on March
10th. All are invited to attend.
