SITUATIONAL AWARENESS STATEMENT
DATE: January 23, 2017
TIME: 9:00 AM
Situation:
A coastal storm with strong winds and heavy precipitation (rain, sleet/freezing rain and snow) will impact the state starting late this afternoon and lasting into Tuesday. The NWS Taunton has made a few changes in the forecast this morning:
- High Wind Warning has been expanded to include Cape Ann and coastal Plymouth County.
- Wind Advisory this afternoon and tonight for all of the state, except for Franklin and Hampshire counties.
- Winter Weather Advisory for more of the interior (East Slopes of Berkshires to Worcester Hills).
-Coastal Flood Advisory for Eastern Massachusetts coast including Cape Cod, Martha's Vineyard, and Nantucket for this evening's (8-9 pm) high tide.
- Coastal Flood Watch for the same areas for Tuesday morning's (8:30-9:30 am) high tide
Storm Hazards:
Wind:
- East wind gusts as high as 60-70 mph along the immediate eastern Massachusetts coast including Cape Ann, coastal Plymouth County, Cape Cod, Martha's Vineyard, and Nantucket.
- Gusts of 40-50 mph expected elsewhere, except 30-40 mph in Franklin and Hampshire counties.
- Strongest winds expected from late this afternoon into tonight, before winds subside quickly Tuesday morning.
- Scattered downed trees and power outages are likely, particularly in the areas in eastern and southeastern MA that receive the strongest winds, and in western and central MA where any snow may be wet and heavy.
Rain:
1" to 3" of rain expected tonight into Tuesday across the state, with the highest amounts (2" to 3") in eastern Massachusetts. Significant urban flooding in areas with poor drainage, as well as small stream flooding is expected. Larger rivers are not expected to flood.
- Most favored areas for moderate flooding include Newburyport, Scituate, and possibly Gloucester and Nantucket Harbor.
Winter Weather:
- Mix of snow, sleet, and some freezing rain expected across much of western and central MA.
- Higher accumulations (2-4 inches) expected across higher terrain near the Berkshires and northern Worcester County. There could be as much as 1 inch of sleet in some areas.
- Less icing is expected than was previously forecasted (now under 1/4 inch).
- Road travel in these areas, particularly on untreated surfaces, may be difficult or hazardous.
Coastal Flooding:
- Pockets of minor coastal flooding expected along the eastern MA coast during this evening's high tide. A storm surge of around 2 ft is expected.
- More widespread minor coastal flooding is expected in the same areas with Tuesday morning's high tide, when there could also be pockets of moderate flooding. A storm surge of 3 ft to perhaps even 4 ft is expected.
