IF this is the little box with a phone plug on one end and a phone jack on 
the other, it was used in line with the headset to cut out the tone used to 
ensure the plane was on the correct heading.  That way, the radio operator 
could hear the superimposed ID of the beacon station.  At least, I think 
that is generally the purpose of the gadget you are talking about.  They 
were an LC filter.  I opened one up one time and there was a little 
transformer like device inside and maybe a cap.

You could find out what the frequency is, by using a variable audio 
oscillator into the input, (plug side) and measure the voltage out across 
the audio band.
