Thanks Duane -  I'll do some more checking of the cartridge and try 
cleaning it as you suggest.

While poking around I found the really interesting website of JE Labs.  
Some of you may be familiar - the photo of the listening room is quite 
memorable.   Here's one link that you don't see very often - a complete 
webpage dedicated to what I like to call "Historic Mono"

For playing vintage jazz and similar mono LPs, he emphasizes the 
importance of using a true mono phono cartridge with a 1 mil diamond 
stylus designed for mono records.  For example, the venerable GE VR-II 
(I remember clearly how happy we were to yank them out of the turntables 
at the radio station I worked at in high school).   I was surprised to 
learn you can still buy a brand-new mono cartridge - the Ortofon SPU 
Mono or the Denon DL102 - but prices are somewhere in the stratospheric 
range.
