Have you considered used? For your price range, it's hard to beat a used
set of Boston Acoustics A-40s, a great small speaker made in the
eighties, which usually go for $40 or less in good condition. I have
purchased five such speakers for my home system. Three of them had to
have the rotten foam replaced, but it's quite easy and well worth the
cost of the kit (I think about $20 for a pair of foam surrounds, glue
and instructions). I think they're better than any new speaker I've
heard in the past several years that sells for less than $200, and on a
par with some more expensive than that.

Where I got them from: Ebay. Yes, I can sense readers of this message
recoiling in horror. It can be risky, especially regarding speakers
(knock a magnet loose in transit and the speaker is ruined), but by
reading the description carefully and asking questions, I've received
nothing but working speakers. No guarantees though!

Other great ebay finds: A working pair of Allison Acoustics model sixes-
another great small speaker, but they are pretty rare and can be pricey.
Plus my favorite FM tuner, the seven-gang Sony ST-A6B. Mine only needed
a good cleaning.

Michael

Subject: [Vintage-Audio] Allied Radio L-2690 and Pioneer SX-202 AM-FM
tuneramplifier

To All-

Yesterday, we had our monthly meeting of the NM Radio
Collectors Club in Albuquerque. During the parking lot
auction and tailgate, I purchased two AM-FM Stereo
tuner amplifiers. One was an Allied Radio L-2690 and
the other was a Pioneer SX-202. The AR was purchased
for one dollar minimum bid. The Pioneer was purchased
for $1.50. So far, I found the digital Pioneer seems
to work fine except for the usual sticky switches that
need cleaning. The AR has RCA phono jacks only so I
will need to get some RCA solderless plugs. I suspect
it probably works also and is analog.

I may just get some inexpensive speakers for them and
either give them as a gift or sell them very
inexpensively. Recycle and Reuse.

If you wish to request photos, please do so off-list.
Thanks.
