[Vintage-Audio] Re: Help With Gear Specs, Please

Yo Bob,

Now you are my Mr. Audio, so go ahead and feel flattered. Now here is your
question of the day:

How come nobody has ever heard of this gorgeous wood end table with the
fifteen inch bottom firing sub-woof thing in it? Was it priced so high that
true audio devotees refused to buy it, as they wanted sound, not furniture?
Did the product review suggest it should have had a yellow paint job and the
smell of citrus added to it? What about performance specs, power demands,
frequency response etc.?

FYI: Any thing that makes my James B. Lansing Century L-100 speakers blush,
I either can not afford or is some mighty fine equipment! Now I am in no way
stating, or inferring, that the Century L-100 speakers are the best.
However, I have yet to hear any eight inch speaker come anywhere close to
the incredible frequency coverage of the James B. Lansing full range 8 inch
speakers I paid $36 each for in December 1964. No cabinet. Just plans for a
bass reflex enclosure. Which my late Father built from 3/4 inch White Birch
plywood. Wow! One speaker sounded better than most three-way systems I have
heard.

Because I am now totally blind, I do listen more closely than the vast
majority of sighted people do. I think I am a pretty fair judge of clean,
accurate and ambient audio reproduction. I believe that considering the
total weight, cabinet size and overall accurate reproduction of audio from
35-14000 Hz that the James B. Lansing speakers did an excellent job. The ass
is among the most clean, sharp and mellow I have ever heard. It runs in my
mind that one of you on this list commented about the woofer that James B.
Lansing used was regarded as one of the best ever.

I think much depends on what a particular person likes to hear. It colors
his/her evaluation of a speaker greatly. Those who like wall shaking head
pounding bass will not like clean reproduction that lacks this. Those who
love cheap crystal shattering high frequency notes will favor this over a
system with a nice mellow response over the commonly 'heard' audio spectrum.
So I suppose bias is simply unavoidable.

DBF
