Bob,
Hmmm. Based on those song titles off the "So Low" album, most is not Southern
Gospel, or even Gospel, more lie country an Country Rock. Figures, after all, it
is Las Vegas in MO! (LOL)
I've got plenty of J.D. Sumner, and some other bass singers who could get flat
down there, such as Bob Thacker. Now I mean sing down there, not growl! You
provide the Carlson's and we are ready to rumble, literally! How's your
earthquake insurance Robert?
Thank you for the telephone numbers, I will see what I can purchase and let you
know how it shakes out. maybe even send you some tantalizing samples just to get
you juices jumping in the morning time Bob.
I remember being at Flint's IMA auditorium, before they tore it apart for the
world's biggest financial flop called Auto World. They had an evening that
featured four quartets that would hit town about twice per year. J.D. was still
singing with the Blackwood Bros. at this time in 1968. When they stepped up to
the mikes the sound people cut the audio about half way through the opening song
when J.D. hit a warming up low note and darn near brought the roof down! I
remember i was drinking a Coke in a paper cup and could feel it vibrating in my
hand! That resonance his voice could generate would literally make a building
shake. It was unreal.
Because of friends who sing professionally, I got back stage a lot. Once when in
an auditorium out of Michigan Several who could see the sound equipment
commented that the EQ was set flat for J.D. He did not need any help!
One amazing thing about his voice, was that he could actually sing well above
the second bass range, almost to second tenor, in fact. He had a tremendous
range.

Duane,
I'd even listen to JD Sumner impersonating a frog, but I don't want to
go there! I haven't heard the recording you mention but can imagine his
bass sound is probably fuller than a standup bass!
I also would like to hear some of Pierce Arrow, based on their website
it's a pretty hot vocal group but I'm just not a Branson kind of guy.
Maybe someone is and can give us a real report. They do have a number of
CDs and DVDs for sale, some of which look like complete shows and the
selections do sound like they'd really showcase a wide range of
vocalists. Your best bet would be to give them a call at: 417-336-8742 -
Toll Free: 877-687-4241 or email info at piercearrowtheater.com
<mailto:info at piercearrowtheater.com> and ask them which ones feature Dan
Britton. I'm sure they'll recommend the CD called "So Low" which is
listed, and includes the songs: In The Garden, King Of The Road, Pieces
Of His Heart, My Old World, Thats All I Need To Know, Jesus And John,
Dream On, Sixteen Tons, Its Never The Right Time, and Good Time
Charlies Got The Blues. May have to check this out myself.
Now if we can find a way to hear Dan or JD's voice through a Karlson
speaker we ought to have a true indication of it's bass reproduction
characteristics!*
