[Vintage-Audio] cartridge recommendations?

The original design is like any design...
many compromises. There was no hum
in the old setup because amp and speaker
response did not let it be objectionable.
What YOU have to do now, when trying
to make a silk purse out of a sow's ear,
is a lot of reengineering. It comes with
the territory. That's why unless you know
what you are doing leave changes to the
experts who charge handsomely for their
efforts.
To me what you are trying to do is not
worth the effort. A few dollars on eBay
and you can get some good equipment.

Subject: [Vintage-Audio] cartridge recommendations?
Hi all,
I have a Voice of Music turntable with a bakelite tonearm- no
facility
for adjustment as far as I can see. It's a very simple deck.
The
cartridge is a sonotone 8TA (turnover 78/LP type needle), just
fine for
most purposes, but I'm interested in upgrading. By "upgrading"
I just
mean a cartridge with better sonic balance for Long Players.
I have two problems. One is I have no control over tracking
force, so
using something new is probably out of the question. Or maybe
not, I
really have no experience with decks like this. The sonotone
came
mounted on this turntable originally, as nearly as I can tell.
Second problem: obviously, there is no ground wire. On old
tube stereos
this deck does OK, but on a newer amp there is a very
pronounced ground
hum. Is there a simple way around this, or do I just have to
use this
turntable with a tube amp? I love tube amps, don't get me
wrong, I just
really want to use it with a transistor amp of very fine
quality in this
particular installation. My tube amps are already doing double
and
triple duty in other rooms of the house.
Thanks for any insight!
Michael
