Hi Ron-
I was fortunate enough to pick up an Ampex 352 a while ago ( It came out of
a church here in Massachusetts ) !
The thing needs to be completely overhauled, and I'm not sure when ( if
ever ) I will get to it.
You didn't say if you were up to overhauling the stuff yourself, which makes
a difference. If you require a unit that is "plug-n-play" than you are
restricted to dealers who can stand behind what they sell, and you will have
to pay accordingly.
In times past, I have wanted to acquire specific items and have found the
following method to yield good results. This may sound overly simple, but
believe me, it works. Simply place some "wanted" ads in appropriate places.
Start with the classified section of your local newspaper. Something like:
Wanted--old reel - to - reel tape recorders ( you may, or may not mention
brand names ) in any condition, dead or alive. Call Ron @-----
This sounds mindless, I know, but it works. Many folks have stuff like this
lying around without any use for it, and are glad to place it into the hands
of someone who will appreciate it.
Do not make any "offers" over the phone, but rather ask callers what they
might take for their treasure. If the price sounds reasonable, ( often
people will say that they have no price in mind, and are open to offers )
than go and check it out. I have obtained a lot of nice stuff over the years
by this method, and met a lot of nice folks along the way.
Another classified that I have used successfully over the years is " Antique
Radio Classified". You have to buy a one year subscription ( pricey ) to use
this, but you are able to run one free ad a month, including "wanted" ads.
Of course, e-Bay is always out there, if you are in a hurry.
Good luck
