Normal tape reels have a small hole in the center like a reel of movie
film. Maybe one quarter inch or 5/16 inch in diameter. Professional tape
reels have a three-inch hole in the middle (I'm guessing on the diameter of
the hole). The "hubs" that Duane is talking about mount on the small
spindle and accept the large-hole reels. Most home-oriented tape decks
cannot mount the 10 inch reels because there is no room for them. The Revox
can, and most Ampex and other such machines can also.
