Duane..
Not all Ampex tape is bad and not all anyone elses tape is
good. The sticky shed prioblem was experiencied by most all
tape manufacturers in the 1978-87 time period. Tape today is
considered to be free of the peoblem, although there are
still those lurking and waiting to yell "I told you so".
The safest bet is to buy new tape. It is available from most
Guitar stores and their competitors and from a number of
mail order places like www.tapewarehouse.com and
http://www.tlwtape.com/.
