Phil,
Interesting set up. With all those amps, do the neighborhood lights dim when you
hit the power 'on' on the main buss? Is it possible to cieling mount those
speakers to take advantage of the length of the room?
Given the best possible equipment and listening room, we are still stuck with
some sound challenged CDS recorded cheaply and sound likewise. A real shame, but
who is too blame? We consumers because we continue to buy the cheap recordings.
If we refused, told the company why, they would listen when the profit margin
started to sound as hollow as their recordings do.
Nice arrangement Phil, let's chat more off list.

The full range speakers are either, Polk audio RTA-15's or B&W DM603 S3.
These are run at frequencies above 75 cps when the sub is on. I find
that I often listen to the speakers full range as well. The Polk's have
higher output but the B&W's are clearly more accurate.
The room is about 12 by 20 feet with the speakers along a long wall. I
wish the room layout out the other way but due to a brick fireplace and
a couple doorways I am stuck with what I have. The floor has a deep pile
carpet with a pad and there is a full set of heavy drapes behind the
speakers. The fireplace on the left end wall is fully flanked by book
cases that act as a effective diffuser. I also have a set of home made
copies of "Tube Traps" in the front corners of the room.
Primary amplifiers are Hafler XL-280 MOS-FET amps for both full range
and bridges for the sub. Both these amps have been internally rewired
with some power supply mods. The sub amp is using a toroidal transformer
as I couldn't find a stock piece that allows 220v operation. All the
amps have a separate branch circuit with the sub amp running on it's
own 220V circuit. Other amps are a number of various Dynaco tube or
solid state models or Heathkit W4AM's and a pair of home brew 572 triode
single ended amps.
As for EQ or loudness compensation I run without any most all the time.
The sub balance is adjusted both by ear and with a 1/3 octive RTA. The
active crossover is a homebrewed 12db/octave unit of sometimes an old
Rane (I can't remember the model#) that I have laying around.
My background is in electronics and sound reenforcement. I have also
done some work in a couple recording studios. I play both Cello and
Guitar. My musical interest range from classical to hard rock and
lots of instrumental Jazz. I do even listen to Pink Floyd at times
too ;)
Hope that fills in some of the gaps,
Phil
