Fire up those VHF radios tomorrow for the premier VHF contest of the year.
No guarantees for propagation (ever), but that is especially true in the
case of 6 meters and above. The contest starts at 2P local time Saturday,
and runs through 11P Sunday. The exchange is your four-character
grid-square (EL88, EL98), and all modes are available to be used. Also,
feel free to use any spotting assistance networks, as they are permitted for
all classes of entrants.
I'll be on six meters only, with my temporary 5 element yagi, and hopefully
we can tempt the propagation gods to behave. Conditions have not been great
so far this season, but this contest has its spot on the calendar because
the sporadic-E clouds seem to favor early June. There's also the chance of
F2 to Europe or South America with the solar flux so high (191 as I write
this). So, let's keep our fingers crossed and work one another when things
get slow (or any time, really). I go with SSB if the band is open, since
QSO rates are highest. CW is next, and finally, FT8. Digital modes are
often available when the band otherwise seems dead, so I'll probably end up
spending lots of time there.
Hoping to work lots of TVARCers!
73, Pete, K2PS
