These two dxpeditions have everyone scrambling to get an ATNO for FT8. A
few nights ago, J5HKT was spotted on 40 working in the fox/hound (F/H)
mode. At the same time, 3DA0RU showed up on the same frequency in what I
thought was also F/H. I started with J5HKT who was a lot stronger but
after a number of tries I switched over the 3DA0RU and his weak signal.
Both stations exhibited the usual two slot fox transmissions with 3DA0RU
being about 1000 Hz higher in frequency which I thought unusual. With
his signal in and out, I switched back to J5HKT to try my luck again.
After a few tries I see that I get called by "<...>" which I figured was
3DA0RU. I frantically went back to calling 3DA0RU while running F/H
mode. He called me again and my rig automatically jumped to several
hundred Hz below him, just like the program is supposed to do. A third
call from him and I forced my xmit frequency to his and finally worked
him. (I did get J5HKT a few minutes later.)
When I checked the 3DA0RU website I saw their notice that they would NOT
be using F/H mode. It appears they are using a variant of WSJT-X called
MSHV (no idea what it stands for) that allows a station to run multiple
xmit slots while the calling stations can stay where they are, much like
traditional CW and SSB pileups. Not a bad idea if it catches on as long
as the DX stations have more that 3 kHz separation, hi.
