Remember that getting heard and understood is different when the band is crowded versus a clear aircraft channel. I find that my typical phonetics of Kilo Two Papa Sierra is maybe too brief for some contesting situations. If I fail a couple of times, I revert to Kilowatt Two Portugal Santiago and have found that to be more readily understood. The downside is that it takes longer to say, and quickness counts.

PS. If I heard Kitty Two Paper Scissors (using the list Doug submitted), I’d expect the response to be “stone!”

Being an active pilot and having spent a significant amount of time talking on radio in the US Army in Vietnam, I like it the way it is. They call it the "NATO Code" but it is used by ALL international airlines on the radio. I have never had an issue understanding the current system.

What drives me wacky is when Hams are trying to get through on a pile-up and they keep changing the phonetics -- first it is the current one, and if that doesn't work they use a combination of several systems mostly centered on country names, or made-up things. The problem for me, and perhaps not for most, is that if the current international system is not used, I have to translate it in my mind rather than "muscle memory".

Like many things these days - people want to change things just to change things. If we get really, really, really smart people involved we will be safe since they will debate it amongst themselves for ever.

Someone is always trying to reinvent the wheel - I'm too old to change but some of the younger generation may want to give it a try.

Kitty One Christmas Tree River????? Don't think so - I will stick with Kilo One Charlie Tango Romeo
