Being an active pilot and having spent a significant amount of time
talking on radio in the US Army in Vietnam, I like it the way it is. They
call it the "NATO Code" but it is used by ALL international airlines on the
radio. I have never had an issue understanding the current system.
What drives me wacky is when Hams are trying to get through on a pile-up
and they keep changing the phonetics -- first it is the current one, and if
that doesn't work they use a combination of several systems mostly centered
on country names, or made-up things. The problem for me, and perhaps not
for most, is that if the current international system is not used, I have
to translate it in my mind rather than "muscle memory".
Like many things these days - people want to change things just to change
things. If we get really, really, really smart people involved we will be
safe since they will debate it amongst themselves for ever.
