For those of you who are CW operators, this weekend is one of the bigger
contests. Complete rules can be found at: http://www.arrl.org/sweepstakes,
but here is a summary.
The contest begins at 4:00PM EST today and runs until 10:00PM EST tomorrow
evening. Single-operator stations are allowed to operate only 24 of the 30
hours.
This is a US and Canada competition, and it has the longest exchange in
contesting. Each station sends a SERIAL NUMBER, a POWER indicator (this is
called the PRECEDENCE), your CALL, two digits indicating the YEAR THEY WERE
FIRST LICENSED (this is called the CHECK), and their ARRL/RAC SECTION.
The power indicator is A for low power, 150W max; B for high power, greater
than 150W; Q for QRP, 5W max.
So, let's say that I am running 100W, I call CQ, and my CQ is answered by
K2PS. It would go like this:
CQ SS K2DM SS
K2PS - note, Pete simply sends his callsign
K2PS 132 A K2DM 59 NFL - note, I don't send K or BK. I simply
stop sending. Then Pete sends his information to me:
247 A K2PS 61 NFL - note, he simply stops sending. (I made up
Pete's check!) Also note that Pete's contact total is WAY ahead of mine!
:-) I reply:
TU SS K2DM - and I am off to the next QSO.
Consider getting on and trying to make a few contacts.
73,
George K2DM
