Thanks again all, for your helpful hints.  Many suggested a range of
products including Lubriplate, lithium, silicon, anti-oxidant compound,
dielectric grease, pure copper anti-seize lubricant, and graphite lubricant.
Who knew there were so many to choose from?  A few suggested disconnect
switches.  But, since I'm basically lazy and cheap, the quick-disconnect
PL-259 plugs fit the bill.  Interestingly, they were cheaper (3 for $11.61)
and faster via EBay (4 days) than Amazon ($13.52 and 9 to 15 days).
