Steve,
There are two things you need to consider.
when using a mobile antenna as your main
base station unit.
The first is a good ground or counterpoise.
It is actually half of your antenna. A mobile
whip like a Tarheel is unbalanced and without
that good ground system or counterpoise, it's
overall performance will be pretty dismal.
The second point is to get it in the clear, not
close to anything and as high as possible.
The two may sound mutually exclusive but
anything you do he in the Villages is going
to be a compromise anyway - it's just how
you handle it.
We have two Tarheel verticals here, using
the well grounded aluminum framework of
the "birdcage" as a counterpoise and we've
had pretty good luck with it. We also have a
flagpole out in front of the house that works
well. Don Crosby, W1EJM, has a number
of ideas that work for him and he uses an
antenna modeling program to assist him.
Remember, its not a case of whether it will
work or not, anything will work, a bedspring
will work, it's just *how well* will it work. Feel
free to give me a call and I'll be happy to show
you what we have done.
