[TVARC] FT8 and Field Day Operation

Maybe not for Field Day, but FT8 will be perfect for the June VHF contest coming up June 9-10. QSOs may be made on ANY mode – but just once per callsign – and the exchange is grid square. I’m expecting some pretty good activity on that mode, especially when the 6M band (seems) dead.

I agree with John. When the call for DxPeditions came up, K1JT reacted and added the Hound/Fox mode. I will not be surprised to see a contest mode added in the next couple of months, (maybe a year).
Keep in mind, FT8 is still in its infancy, with plenty of time and room to grow. The bottom line here for us is to just have fun.
On the other hand, I would like to be prepared if there is a possible sequence (albeit manual) to send the necessary macros in the correct order to achieve a successful FD QSO; just in case we hear other FT8 stations out there calling CQ FD.

Hi Ed,
Were it only that simple! Except it won't work.
Only one of the messages can be customized,
that being #5. I guess if you unchecked the auto
sequence box and wrote several macros that
could be manually called up, but then it would
not auto log for you,
I guess because of the schlockmeister that you
would have to go about doing it, the ARRL has
not sanctioned it as a viable mode. I think we will
soon be seeing some substantial changes in FT-8
soon, because of it's extreme popularity and the
desire of folks to be able to use it, or some variation,
in contests.
Just my 2¢ ...

I've been playing with the FT8 program and finally figured out how it can
be used for Field Day. The "73" message at the end of a QSO can be
customized with other messages. I entered "CQ FD K4VRC" and "K4VRC 1A
NFL" and saved these messages. When selected, the program sends them
like any normal transmission. The messages are within the 13 character
field limit.
When using them and someone calls, you have to be careful to select
"K4VRC 1A NFL" to answer the station. If not, the program will
automatically scroll to a report. It will also end with the normal "73"
message, i.e. not the field day exchange.
Hope this helps for demonstrating FT8.
