Well said Pete.
My speed is closer 10 ten with the strait key. I am also using my old novice
key. An old Western Electric JT38 type key. It's old and I am sure there are
better ones out there. But for now this is OK.
K3ZGA introduced me to SKCC and it has been my main interest since. A bit of
nostalgia combined with a bit of achievement makes for a good mix.
46 Qs ---- WOW. The best I have done is 30 for the whole weekend Sprintathon
. Ten hours or more invested. But then, that's the contester in you.
I'm just traveling up the achievement ladder at my own pace. Two years into
it and I am at T6 with 25 Qs left for T7. Nearly 800 Qs in the log.
It really gets hard to find new guys to work when you are a T6. My aim is
to pick up one new one every day. I watch the forum and the skimmer and tune
- tune - tune. So far I'm about half way to that objective. ---- And then
on to S. and to become one of the "Big guys". J
Spent most of the weekend at Soccer tournaments in Ocala watching my
grandson play Soccer but did manage to make a few contacts. Looking for Cs,
Ts, and Ss. to reach T7 level.
It's like hunting for new sections in the November Sweepstakes. He who gets
to the "Clean Sweep" with the least amount of contacts wins. J
There is an "interactive" skimmer available. Just type in the call and it
tells you if you need them or not. Not really fair since the new guys need
you too.
But, it's also, fun to help the new guys. Often, I will email them after the
QSO just to encourage them. I have noticed some guys freezing up half way
through. Wondered about that. Could it be the 1X2 call? If only they knew
that I'm only just a Novice at heart.
Anyone interested should check out their website. http://www.skccgroup.com
It's free to join and to get your own number. Bunch of very nice folks.

At the behest of Bob, K3ZGA, I finally spent a little time making QSOs with
my trusty old J-38 key in the Straight Key Contest Club (SKCC) Weekend
Sprintathon. In a tad over two hours made 46 QSOs in 28 states/provinces.
But it's way harder than hitting F1 over and over. My fist was pretty
rusty, but it held out OK I guess. I tried using my old "bug," but just
couldn't quite get the hang of it so I dug out my original novice key (from
1961) and it worked just fine!
I encourage the rest of you HFers or would-be HFers to try one of these
events. Code speed is much slower than in regular contests since it just
isn't possible (at least for normal people) to send much faster than 15-20
WPM. So those of you who shy away from CW contests because the speeds are
too high, this just may be the way to experience the joys of this mode.
