At the behest of Bob, K3ZGA, I finally spent a little time making QSOs with
my trusty old J-38 key in the Straight Key Contest Club (SKCC) Weekend
Sprintathon. In a tad over two hours made 46 QSOs in 28 states/provinces.
But it's way harder than hitting F1 over and over. My fist was pretty
rusty, but it held out OK I guess. I tried using my old "bug," but just
couldn't quite get the hang of it so I dug out my original novice key (from
1961) and it worked just fine!

I encourage the rest of you HFers or would-be HFers to try one of these
events. Code speed is much slower than in regular contests since it just
isn't possible (at least for normal people) to send much faster than 15-20
WPM. So those of you who shy away from CW contests because the speeds are
too high, this just may be the way to experience the joys of this mode.

73, Pete, K2PS
