[TrunkCom] getting access to EDACS radio to monitor ProVoice systems?

Hi everyone, I had an interesting conversation with someone a while ago about getting access to EDACS radios to listen to ProVoice systems.  The person I talked to said if I wanted to I'd be paying a hefty price for one in access of $1000 or thereabouts.  
    This is starting to remind me of the old days prior to the APCO-25 scanners where one would have to pay a hefty price for a Motorola Portable.  I'm just wondering what success people on these lists have had with these portables and getting them programmed?  I know that radioreference has a few feeds of ProVoice systems.
