[TrunkCom] while we are on the subject of encryption

Do not be fooled that just because systems are P25 that you have
interoperability.
---- Encryption keys must be shared or comms need to be in the clear
---- On trunked systems the radios must be registered on the system to
allow for channel grants.
---- Some P25 trunking is explict some is implicit.
---- Some trunked systems would have trouble handling the extra users,
just not enough channels to go around
Interoperability can be achieved very easily through the use of shared
conventional freq., also The "I" word has our govt officials spending
our money feveriously and for what ? Another system that will fail
during a disaster, probably. Everyone points to Katrina, the real truth
there is the problem was so enormous that is was not manageable anyway,
we would like to think it was manageable but is was not.
I am certainly not much of a fan of OpenSky but it can be easily ported
to a P25 system through patches at the dispatch consoles.
I do not believe we have interoperability anymore today than we did 5
years ago, we just think we do.
If local authorities would work with their neighboring communities and
really work out a communications plan and freq sharing then you will
have interoperabiltity.
Imagine a major disaster in a county with a countywide trunked P25
system. I am talking every agency in the county is activated. The
system will never handle the traffic.
A well planned local conventional system would work well.

I believe that M/A Com will interface with P25 systems. Check their web
site.

EXACTLY! I agree with that.
If that is the case with ProVoice then what the heck is the point of
standards and open-source and trying to achieve "transparent"
Interoperability? Plus as far as I know, all the money grants "raining"
from
Homeland Security do stipulate at least some P-25 requirements in order
to
get the grants.
All reasons related to our hobby aside, this is some serious fraud,
waste
and abuse of tax payers money to allow so many proprietary AND
incompatible
technologies to be used as primary communications systems for Public
Safety,
especially with all the money, time and effort already spent NATIONWIDE
on
P25 related technology that will go down the drain and we all end up
even
worse than today as far as efficiently communicating during emergency
events.
And as usual who gets it in the end? (no pun intended) The tax payers,
who
might possibly even pay with their lives when these egotistic agencies
can't
communicate during an emergency.......
