I was able to pick one up at our local "RadioShaq" on Monday, Volume 3 & 4
combined (Catalog Number: 62-250). This edition is great!

When I went to RadioShack I was questioned by the shaq droid if I needed
help, but after I gave him the third degree about the lack of a paper
catalog or even the availability of a CD-ROM he told me that it cost
RadioShack millions of dollars to print those catalogs, and they didn't
know if they had decided what to do about the next one, or if they would
even have the full catalog online. I could hear Arnold Schwarzenegger in my
mind saying "Big mistake". Then I realized the droid must have gotten that
question a few times before because he turned on his cloaking device and
quickly vanished with a wooshing sound. So I went into Leonard Nimoy mode
and went "in search of" a Police Call CD-ROM only to find one orange
covered one from last year in the bottom of a glass case with the
imprisoned base and handheld scanners. I went on to look at the book
section when I discovered a paperback that I thought would be an older
vintage Police Call, but something was just a little different about this
one. It looked like it was super-sized at Mickey-D's. Then I remembered the
Pontiac Grand-Pre commercial that "wider IS better". I pulled it off the
shelf and to my surprise it was a 2003 Police Call in paperback! Just as
the older editions have been pre-CD ROM, but with a twist. It says on the
cover includes "Plus" that was originally introduced a few years ago as a
separate paper edition. A large red spot on the cover also says "includes
the Police Call National CD-ROM (it's inside the back cover). WOW! Bonus!!
Just like those days of getting the secret spy decoder ring (you know, the
enigma one that decoded those Spanish 5 number groups on HF) in the bottom
of the cereal box. Also, reading in the instructions, it includes Pozilla
software to load the RadioShack PRO-2052 Dual-Trunking Scanner (Catalog
Number: 20-432) with frequencies from the DBF file via CD-ROM. Great 40th
anniversary edition!

FYI, If you happen to have a problem running the Police Call CD-ROM there
is a patch for the "Invalid Path or file name" error when entering the
security word on the Pozilla web site: http://www.pozillasoft.com/index2.htm

I always enjoyed looking forward to the latest edition in paperback. I hope
they continue to publish it this way. Nothing like a paper copy to
highlight and take along on the road or to the "library".

I also see it is edited by our very own Scanner Master, Richard Barnett! By
the way Rich, I read your comments about no scanner yet available for
Digital, glad to see you, Terry Brennan and Greg Knox had a hand in finally
getting the Digitracker to happen. Here in the midwest and especially in
Indiana (SAFE-T) the Digital systems are just getting established, so the
Uniden BC250D and BC785D were just in time for the Genesis of digital.

Interesting that the cover is the older green unlike the cover shown on the
RadioShack.com online "catalog".

Much of the general scanner guide in the front of the Police Call has been
updated and is full of helpful information.
As always, they still need any inside information from scanner hobbyists
including the new digital systems coming online and talk group
identification from new and existing trunking systems.

Thanks again for publishing it, Gene Hughes! I look forward to the next
edition.
