[TrunkCom] does anyone know how the new scanners will handle both data and voice from the same channel?

It's not a waste at all, in fact it's very smart. They produce ONE radio
with ONE controller board that is software driven. Then, depending on
what features the user purchases, the radio is flashed accordingly. No
special boards needed (except of course for encryption), no parts
changeout, no need to even open the radio, just simply connect it to the
computer and re-program (flash) it. Software is the way to go nowadays.
Just remember that not all features are available in all radios - there
are still model differences where certain models will do more than
others. For example, the MTS-2000 cannot do Astro digital in any form,
so no matter what you do to the radio it won't do it. But the XTS-3000
can do either analog or Astro digital.
