I had a similar problem with my "new" IBM Thinkpad 760XL. Once I
downloaded and installed the utility software from IBM, I discovered an
"expand" setting or something to that effect in the video section. Once
I selected that, the display in DOS went to the full limits of the
display instead of being scrunched into the middle of the screen.
Check your manufacturer's support page to see if there is a downloadable
utility that allows you to alter various laptop settings that cannot be
altered in the BIOS. setup
