OK,
Let me clear up all this mis-information be fore we have public safety operating
on 3 Mhz.
On November 21 st , Nextel filed a white paper with the FCC to propose a
realignment of spectrum between it and the public safety community.
Specifically, under the proposal, Nextel would exchange 4 MHz in the 700
MHz guard band, approximately 8 MHz of current SMR spectrum in the
lower non-contiguous channels of the 800 MHz band and approximately 4
MHz of spectrum in the 900 MHz band (for a total of 16 MHz). Nextels
current, contiguous spectrum holdings of 10 MHz in the upper 800 MHz
band would be unaffected.
In return, Nextel would receive 16 MHz of spectrum, comprised of 6 MHz
in the upper 800 MHz band and 10 MHz in the 2100 MHz band.
Several government agencies are currently assessing the 2100 MHz band
with regard to its potential allocation for commercial advanced wireless
services, including 3G. For example, the National Telecommunications and
Information Administration (NTIA), the FCC, the Department of Defense
(DoD) and other agencies plan to complete an assessment by late Spring
2002 of the potential use of the 1710-1770 and 2110-2170 MHz bands for
commercial advanced wireless services.
Nextel proposes to contribute up to $500 million to help cover
the public safety communitys costs and other expenses associated with the
realignment, provided the FCC adopts the proposal substantially as
submitted.
