Subject: PSA from Brother Bob Armbruster
Dear Brothers,
As you know, we have been sending books and clothing to the seminaries in the Philippines that lost thousands of books in the November 2013 typhoon.
On my recent trip, I spoke to the dean of studies of the high school and college seminary departments of the Archdiocese of Palo. He is, of course, interested in receiving books that would be standard reading for high school and college students in the U.S.: English literature, novels, dramas, world history, church history, art, music, philosophy, sociology, psychology, math, science ..... I think the faculty like to receive high school and college textbooks that are being used in the U.S. to see what is being taught in American high schools and colleges.
With regard to philosophy books, I will especially be seeking these from retired Jesuits and from retired diocesan priests who have taught philosophy. With regard to science books, I would want to send only recent books.
I have been seeking theology, Scripture, church history and canon law books primarily from retired priests, but if you have some of these, we will be glad to send them.
CDs on academic topics are also welcome as are music CDs.
Not all of the seminarians have their own Bibles. So if you have more Bibles than your family needs, it would be good to send them. Dictionaries and other reference books are also helpful.
The sister who is registrar of the major seminary appealed for office supplies. If you had business envelopes and have retired or changed companies, the seminary can put their own label on top.
In this digital age, we would not spend a lot of money to buy, say, reference books, but if we can get them for free, that's good. Also, the Archdiocese of Palo in Leyte is a place that frequently loses electricity. Our parish has a special connection with the Archdiocese of Palo as we have been served over the years by four priests from there -- Fathers Ramil, Amadeo, Wilson and Paul.
We are also sending some books to the seminary of the Archdiocese of Capiz -- from which Fr. Dedert Duarte graduated and where he is expected to teach -- but obviously Leyte has the priority as the seminaries there lost so many books in the typhoon.
For the Philippines, we want to send only summer clothing -- short-sleeve shirts, T-shirts, light slacks, shorts, bathing suits -- for the seminaries.
If you have warm clothes, we can give them to the day laborers here in Bergenfield.
I will be glad to collect books and clothing at our meeting Wednesday night.
If you would like to make a contribution to the costs of shipping cargo boxes, you can make out a check to St. John's Church and indicate Philippines seminary. Kindly give this to me. I will give it to Msgr. and he will give it to Kathy, who will give me cash or a check to send the boxes. It costs $33 to $35 for each cargo box.
On my recent trip, I found out that the books are much appreciated.
Thanks.
Bob Armbruster

P.S. If any of you have connections with parishes or schools -- especially in New York -- that are closing, they would probably be happy to donate books.
