Dave
Thank you!
very good info. we have a lot in common...I am the CEO of the Society of Cable Telecommunications Engineers in Exton, Pa. 13,000 members world wide...We have a lot of radio folks, so if you do not object, I will share some of the thinking with those interested....
Projects in the works at K4MHZ:
1. a 100w, (continuous) 432 MHz beacon is started for FM25. All the parts in hand.
2. Joe/CT1HZE asked if my 6m beacon on 50.0625 MHz can go to 100 watts. it appears to be the most frequently heard from the southern U.S. A 150W amp is in hand that we will run at 100w with dual blowers.
I agree on your thinking about the path from NC to Africa. I have been in Hatteras since 1986. lived there full time for a number of years with amazing openings that do not appear to be heard inland. BTW: I monitored the sea water temp on the path to the Azores from FM25. It seemed to be cooler then last year.
My earlier beacon was hit by lightning. The beacon was a modified commercial FM 50W radio keyed with a programable CW ID in loop mode. It ran 30w into a M2 omni at 50'. lots of reports from VE's to the north and Florida to the south. When I heard San Juan Coast Guard on 156.800 & 157.100 MHz could not raise anyone on 144.200 or .300 10 years ago.
hope to have my Commander II power supply rebuilt for 600W on 144.300 manned at peake window next year.
lets talk more...

Mark,
My SVHFS society presentations are available at http://sites.google.com/site/n7bhcvhf/files. Expanded versions of the two papers can be found in CQ VHF magazine. The article on subsidence ducting was in the previous issue, and the article on simple beacon/station construction is in the next upcoming issue.
