The topic of Industrial Design is quite as fascinating to some of us as
that of the circuitry inside, especially in how what we'd nowadays refer
to as the "UI" (user interface) functions, as well as appearance.
When I was working on automotive design projects, an engineering manager
at of the Big 3 automakers told me that "when Engineering gets into a
fight with Styling, Styling always wins". It certainly doesn't take much
comparison between modern and vintage vehicles to see proof of that.
A great little book on the topic is "The Design of Everyday Things" by
Don Norman, for those interested in learning more about this interesting
blend of engineering, art, and psychology:
