[TMC] GPR-90 what were those engineers thinking ???

I have a GPR 90 I am working on. The usual items were addressed - caps, noisy swithces etc.

The radio came nicely on the lower three bands. But bands 4 , 5 and 6 are double conversion and they are dead

Turns out  the second oscillator is dead. It is not the tube. I'm pretty sure the crystal is shot for the oscillator.

But what get me is the real poor design for the enclosure that houses the second mixer, oscillator and buffer. 

It is a night mare to remove. I have no idea what they were thinking when they  thought  up this poor arrangement.

They must have thought it would never  go bad...
