We used to use microcrystalline wax mixed with paraffin wax combined with spirits. Adding a touch of naptha makes it dry faster, but then it tends to dry up faster in the container. Constant exposure outdoors it provided protection for at seven years. I used heavy coats and found the wax still performing when I reapplied.  I had a maintenance schedule.
