I think that this is just part of the cycle.
Look at the history of ABANA. It is a success story in that from near
death blacksmithing has had a resurgence as a viable trade.
It is not what it was in 1890 , but there are new , fairly large shops
all over. When I took an interest it was mostly backyard , weekend
warriors. The cluster smiths that I could find were 40-50 miles out. I
can now walk to a 5000 sq-ft shop and everyone knows someone with a
forge. Those forges do not see too much use in my experience as the
urban/suburban environment curbs activity a bit.
From industry, to death watch, to artist hobby resurgence, to
commercial rejuvenation, to a generation with other interests.
???
Then there is the generational divide. The one following mine is not
quite as hands on, unless you count keyboards.
