[TheForge] New Doyle Anvil from Harbor Freight

I always remember the anvil I pasted up years and years ago at a farm sale in Iowa, sometime in the mid 80's.  I was just getting interested in blacksmithing at the time and this anvil came up for sale.  It was a nice anvil, and there where just two of us bidding on it.  When the price got to $ 125 I quit. (It still would have been a good deal at 150 or 175 but I didn't know that at the time.)  So the estate sale moved on and then near the end they brough out this huge tub full of hardie tools.  Several hundred dollars worth.  The person running the auction said "oh those belong with the anvil".  So they gave them to him.

Lesson learned.  I bought my first good anvil new from Laurel Foundry in the 90's, 175 pounds at around $ 800.  Still have it.  I also have a 380 pound Reffinghaus which I really really love.  I only bought it after I bought a Grand Piano for my wife.  She loves that piano and is very good.  Plays several hours a day and is an accomplished choir accompanist.  That piano purchase in retirement really help my tool budget.

While making my rounds,I stopped off to take a quick look at one of these.

My impression is that it would be more than adequate for someone just
starting out.

This is on the theory that newbies are better served by spending their
money of a few good books and travel to meet other smiths and play in
the fire some with them.

Yes eventually it will get beat up and be to small. By that time if one
has stuck with it they will have a network to source something better
and have some idea of the type of smithing that appeals to them.

For my use it would make a decent light shop anvil in my sheet metal
shop, or something to toss in the back of the truck for use on a job site.
