[TheForge] Here I go, trying to save your @$$&$ again... (Sorry, no metals content. Does trying to save blacksmiths count?)

*Synopsis*: It is pneumonia caused by COVID-19 that is killing so many
people. For some reason, although these patients cannot get enough oxygen,
they can exhale carbon dioxide produced in their body. Since it is carbon
dioxide that triggers the feeling of suffocation, people are not going to
the ER soon enough, and are critical when they get there.

*Interim Remedy*: Monitor the oxygen saturation of your blood using a
pulse oximeter. Any doctor's office or urgent care facility has one of
these and they can be purchased on-line as well. This is the familiar
device that the med assistant clips over your finger and reports, 30
seconds later, your pulse rate and your blood oxygen saturation. The
latter value should be 95%-100%. Some COVID-19 ER patients are reported to
have blood oxygen saturation as low as 50% -- critically low. (I believe
this to be the origin of the "Can you hold your breath for 10 seconds" test
for COVID-19. I'm not sure of that and I'm not advocating that test.)

I strongly recommend everybody read this NY Times article: The Infection
That’s Silently Killing Coronavirus Patients, By Dr. Richard Levitan

As an related side note, I am an advocate of supplemental zinc, vitamin D
(though not in excess as it's liver toxic in excess) and megadoses of
vitamin C (i.e., >2000 mg/day), all of which are important to maintain your
immune system in top condition. Most people don't succumb to COVID-19, but
you can bet those with compromised immune systems are more likely to
succumb.

I know that many of you are in states that are not in the same degree of
lock-down as NJ. Some declare that we're overracting, but *please* don't
be stupid about it. We won't know whether it was an overreaction until
it's all over and all the numbers (cases, deaths, permanent debilities) are
counted.

NJ currently is second in the nation in *per capita *cases and deaths from
COVID-19, but that's not because of some failing on our part. (Early
testing would have helped. My girlfriend, who was diagnosed by x-ray with
pneumonia still can't get tested. She's doing well BTW) Most of the rest
of the nation is in an earlier stage of infection and cases *will* continue
to increase. Not only that, it is likely there will be a resurgence of
cases in the autumn, as happens with flu. We can only hope there may be a
vaccine by then, but I'm not counting on one till next spring at the
earliest.

Please pay attention to the news and protect yourselves and your loved ones
by socially isolating as much as possible. (You can talk to your neighbor
from 20 feet away and to your parents or cousins across town by phone just
as well as in person.)

Everybody needs to shop for food, but be "man enough" (even you women!) to
wear a mask and face shield and maybe gloves, when you do. Yes, people look
at you funny. I can take the funny looks, but I'm no match for the
coronavirus.

I actually was stopped (from a safe distance) by a lady in a supermarket
who had her turtleneck pulled up over her nose as a make-shift mask. She
told me that when she saw me enter wearing light raincoat, homemade mask,
face shield and broad-brimmed hat, she figured that if I could shop looking
like that, she could pull her turtleneck over her face!

As blacksmiths, we often discuss non-specifically toxic compounds --
welding fumes, zinc fumes, coal smoke, patina chemicals, etc. We learn how
to minimize the risk of those things by proper handling and ventilation.
Well, *think of the coronavirus as a specific toxin that targets the human
body*, above all else. Pretty scary, no? The information on "proper
handling" is out there. Please pay attention to it.
