we used optical pyrometers in the steel industry since the early 1990's, then in the forging industry (iron and steel), they are surprisingly accurate in the range from 1600 to 2300F, perfect for smiths, but pretty expensive.

Interesting to see what is new in the last 20 years.  We (ALCOA) worked with Williamson and in house research for many years to get one that would work on Aluminum for use on our hot lines.  Things have come a long way and they may well of cracked this egg.  When I retired we were still saying "God never intended for non-contact temperature measurement of shiny metal".
