I don't agree with this. I have seen and used a lot of rivet forges
that have no lining at all.
I believe one of the secrets of taking care of your forge is how you put
your fire out. Dredging the fire seems to promote an acid leach out of
the coal. I put just enough water on to remove most of the color then
I spread it out.
I learned the above process while using a wood forge in Burton. Ohio -
WRABA. Soaking the fire would have ended up rotting out the wood sides
and possibly allow water to leak back through the stone, side tuyere to
the bellows.
