I use a MIG all the time outdoors and the only time I have any real
problems is when I have the gun to far away from the puddle, or a really
strong breeze 5mph or more. In this case I shorten the stickout and it does
well. Maybe once a year I use flux core..
I don't really like regular flux core.. While it offers some advantages
with a lighter duty machine as it has a little higher heat input for a
given setting, Its messy and if I'm going to weld 1/8" and over with mig I
see no reason to use it.
- Now Dual shield on the other hand is awesome for those jobs that need
the extra cleaning or if the weld is a big one and it's outside and dirty.
Dual shield welds really well and cleans up a lot of the junk that might
get into the puddle but runs just about like solid wire.. The flux flakes
off like 7018 and I keep 0.045 in stock..
I also keep 0.030 and 0.035 in 44lbs spools and my go to is S70-6 and
lincoln wire L56 seems to work very well..
in an under powered machine everything has to be about perfect to get a
good weld...
The machine I use is an Esseti 501c with wire feeder and a 25Ft push pull
gun.. I can run out 50ft from the power source and up to 500amps.. I have
welded material up to 2" pushing 0.045 wire and haven't ever had to go more
than 3 turns of the power knob and it has 10 turns..
Anyhow, Under powered welder with flux core will give a little better
results on thicker materials but ideally the area needs to be prepped and
a good ground is a must..
