[TheForge] Old band saw blade

Hi all,
the ASTM D6A is used because it is strong, and far, far less expensive than the high speed steel or carbide that is welded to it for the saw teeth. Maybe $0.85 per pound for the D6A, and $9/# for M1 or M2, making it much less expensive to make the band saw blade from the D6A, including the cost of electron beam welding the edge material to it (the edge material is only about a tenth of the total weight).

For those of you that may not know - L6 is basically - 4370 - like 4340 but with 70 points of carbon instead of 40. Very good steel and you can heat-treat it just like it was 4140 or 4340 but it will be harder. Don't forget to temper.

Thanks, L-6, even if it has carbide teeth brazed onto it?

15n20 usually for high speed m42 blades. I believe wood mizer are 15n20 also.

L6 for circular.

You can test by seeing if a test strip will air harden..

I have a piece of old band saw blade without carbide teeth, probably from a Wood Miser. What kind of steel is it likely to be? 15N20 maybe? What steel is used in circular saw blade that has carbide teeth? Thanks, Ron ______________________________________________________________
