[TheForge] hydraulic chainsaws

I sure would not want to use a hydraulic saw. I want to be able to get away from the saw when needed and I don't want anything restricting where it or I can go.
I've seen trees do too many crazy things. We had one rotate almost 180 degrees on the stump before falling because it had so much built in stress. Another tree jack knifed on a hill side with the but plowing a furrow about 5 yards up the hill. That one was a real pain to finish cutting because the end of the vertical split was the same distance up the tree.

>Sound advice Charles on all counts. Hydraulic tools are NOT meant to be hand held, even things like the jaws of life are supported mostly buy what they're cutting or spreading, not the EMT.
>
>About problems with a Stihl chain saw. They don't care about alcohol in the fuel, you're just letting it sit too long. Alcohol is hydroscopic, it draws water from the air and water causes problems. If your chainsaw was full of gunk stop using cheap oil.
>
>Buy gas one gallon at a time you can run a 345 Stihl full throttle for 8hrs on a gallon and you aren't doing near that. The tank holds less than a quart, mix the fuel one quart at a time and leave the gallon can SEALED. I have trouble believing you don't know how to operate 2 stroke tools properly.

>Stop blaming the tools Terry it isn't their fault.

>Hydraulic chainsaws are no fun either. You have to have gear reduction on the motor or risk boiling on the fluid. The hoses are heavy. Regarding twostroke chainsaws, no secrets.
>1) Buy quality professional units. Stihl, Huasky etc have homeowner lines and a professional lines. There is a big difference. 2) Have them tuned up by someone that knows what they are doing. Every year. 3) Run them every day. 4) Only use quality fuel and oil additive and mix it per the instructions (no eyeballing)5) End of season run them dry with a preservative/fuel stabilizer added to the fuel. My son is a wild land firefighter. This is what works for them. Growing up with me, he had a different experience. I was too cheap for number 1 and 2 above and my circumstances did not lend themselves to number 3 though the rest I did follow. So at forty years of age I turned my back on chainsaws and focused on keeping several good quality axes sharp, as well as several two man and one and a half man crosscut saws always sharp. In my fifties now, I have a pro chainsaw, but still use the axe and saw almost exclusively. I have an unusually large single bit Kelly that wi!

I teach scouts to fell trees by hand and they have proven many times (profitably for me) that two boys on a crosscut saw can buck a 12- 16 inch log before a forty year old dad can even get a chainsaw started many times now.
