I sort of hate to get into this, it has been too much fun so far...

But, have you considered cold removal?  Something like the freeze stuff
that you use for warts or that they burn off the pre-cancerous growths on
my arms? The spray liquid nitrogen would shrink the rivet and shrink the
spring away from the hole.

Don't ask me how hard it would be to get some.  Maybe even dry ice could be
used.
