[TheForge] Floating glass to back.

That's a method for sure, there is investment and release agents for casting
glass. Timing being my forte' the glass studio and supply I keep hearing
recommendations for is in the process of moving. The old location is cleaned
out and it'll be mid May before their grand opening in the new location.
It's another 25 miles or so but it's a nice road trip, much nicer than
driving to Anchorage and beating through traffic.

My most recent experiment didn't go well, I piled the frit well above the
border of the negative space as recommended. The process of outgassing
causes the glass to swell like proofing bread dough and it flowed over the
top.

I'm going to try doing it in lifts next. Melt a little and add a little more
after the first lift outgasses and repeat till it hits the level I'm trying
for. I'll also turn the forge down and add some more heavy fire brick for
thermal storage so it'll temper longer.

I need to make a couple tools, first is a little spoon with a pour spout
edge so I can add frit to the HOT cross without scorching myself. It'll be
similar to the little spoon Marilyn and Liz use for enameling, just longer
handled. I picked up some SS picks like dental picks and might be able to
pop the bubbles to accelerate outgassing. I'll have my Dremel handy so I can
clean off any molten glass that sticks. The stuff is stickier than hot
caramel.

More fun to follow.

I haven't tried that it's on the schedule now for sure. I'm melting frit or
noodles not cut glass. I think cutting the kiln paper as a plug has more
promise than anything I've tried seen so far.

Thank you.

Have you tried cutting a piece kiln paper that fits tight in the bottom of
the void with another larger piece under? Cut the glass so the fit is close
so you don't have to fire quite as high.

Tin's SG is 7.3 and steel's SG is 7.8 so floating is no joy. Mild steel
won't float on molten tin. It's possible to come up with a stand to support
the cross's bottom surface just below the surface of the tin. The problem
then is freeing the piece from the tin once it's cooled. Tempering
(annealing) the glass takes considerable time and isn't finished till it's
cool. Also, I don't want to "tin" the cross.

Possible but maybe not practical. I'll put floating with tin in the maybe
files unless the kiln paper doesn't work or one of the art glass people
don't have a better alternative.

Thanks again guys. I LOVE brainstorming.

Jer
