At least for Carolina wrens, 1 gallon plastic pan "cans" (laytex paint, 
well washed) works well.  I had 6 of those in my wood shop with 
left-over nails, screw,etc. on a shelf  Became a bird condo. Save the 
lid, cut a small hole, hang it with the opening perpendicular to the 
ground.  At the end of the fledgling season, pop the lid, wash out the 
old nest and set it for the next client.
