[TheForge] Bird houses

Terry,

Maybe when you get a new bird house, before putting it out run some
stainless deck screws into it to prevent problems.

We used to have a lot of bird houses and they were just put together
with regular common nails, 4 or 6 penny. The only problem I remember was
you couldn't paint around the hole or they wouldn't use it. The houses
made from old license plates for roofs seemed to hold up pretty good.

hello Bob; thank you for the reply. The problem has not been so much
the wood but the fasteners used to put it together. definitely not
Stainless Steel, i doubt not even galvanized. after a year or two the
screws, staples, brads, etc are all rusted out. the bird house or
feeders just fall apart. once the fasteners are rusting the winds do the
rest. I have many bird houses and bird feeders in the garage in pieces.
I would have to do 3D jig saw puzzle and then fasten them back together.
I would use stainless steel crown staples in most of them. some would
need stainless steel screws or brads. many of these bird houses and bird
feeders were purchased at Blains Farm and Fleet. I did purchase one
birdhouse made by suncast in batavia, illinois. it was tough-stuff
plastic. the sun bleached that out in less than a year. the house was
translucent. birds did not like that at all. i have a 6 gallon plastic
gas can that way. used for the log splitter and the sun bleached it
white translucent in one summer.
