Andy as to the flashing.
Send me a picture and then we could talk.
The "tons o' tar" approach makes my skin crawl.
When I get called to fix one of those it easily raises the cost of doing
it correctly 3X.

If there is any kind of pitch at all tin shingles properly installed
with a cap flashing should do the trick.

Tin shingle 4X4 X (whatever the exposure is on the shingle +2")

Tin shingles 3-4 out onto the roof deck interlaced with the
shingles(think fish scales.) 3-4 inches up the wall (bend so that they
are spring fit to the wall.
Secure tin shingles using minimalist thought process. If you start at
the bottom one nail in the top edge into the roof deck and sliding the
wall section beneath the siding you are good to go.
The next tin shingle (with the asphalt shingle between) overlaps the
first one and covers the nailed space.
