Yep. That's what I'm thinking too: Ordinary tongs for most work -- like
95+% of it. These (or short vise grips) for those odd things you simply
cannot find a pair of tongs to fit. However, modifying the jaws will make
them even better for that. I especially want to try these out when doing
demos, where I do NOT have an extensive collection of tongs with me.
I can't speak for others, but I favor
Poz tongs
box-jaw tongs (if you have one in the right size)
horse-shoer's tongs
then everything else.
