FWIW, I've never had a wire brush wheel on my pedestal machine. But I
often use one on an end grinder. [1] The workpiece is in a vise or
otherwise clamped to the bench. It's *possible* to get yourself into
the plane of rotation but it's easier to avoid that than it is with a
wire wheel mounted on a fixed horizontal motor. And the wheel is
always (if you pay attention) out at the end of the power tool, away
from you.
OTOH, since you're turning the grinder every which way, escaped
bristles can go off in whatever orientation the rotation plane has at
the moment. Not good with other people nearby.
